2012 Election Observers Delegation
**The application deadline has passed. Please stay up to date with the delegation by visiting this site or our Facebook page.**
Overview:
SalvAide is once again calling on Canadians to accompany the Salvadoran electoral process. Be a part of our El Salvador Election Observers Delegation 2012 for the March 11th Municipal and Legislative Assembly elections.
Twenty years after the Chapultepec Peace Accords ended the twelve-year popular armed insurrection against a de facto military dictatorship, El Salvador’s democratic development continues to face challenges. Communities and social movement organizations continue to call for international observers to help:
-
Observe and provide witness to the electoral process and to potential violations of the electoral code before and during the elections;
-
Observe the implementation of residential voting, a new ballot, and a new vote tallying method;
-
Provide a presence in order to diminish political intimidation and violence;
-
Support the call for implementation of greater democratic election reforms.
SalvAide’s Election Observers Delegation will bear witness to the electoral process in some of the more than 350 rural communities where SalvAide’s Salvadoran sister social movement organizations, CRIPDES and CORDES, are active. The Delegation’s key objectives are to:
-
Contribute to free and fair elections;
-
Generate a safe environment to stimulate democratic participation
-
Observe and inform about the implementation of election reforms;
-
Deepen participants’ understanding of El Salvador’s social and economic relations;
-
Promote people-to-people solidarity.
