February 15, 2010, PRESS RELEASE:

Through community support, SalvAide raises more than $80,000 for Hurricane Ida relief programs!

Since Hurricane Ida struck El Salvador on November 7th 2009, numerous community fundraising and cultural events were organized by primarily grass roots organizations to raise funds to support SalvAide’s disaster relief projects. These events, including silent auctions, benefit dinners and cultural events, raised more than $80,000; an astounding amount considering that all funds came from twin community members, supporters and committed friends of SalvAide and El Salvador.

The effects of Hurricane Ida have been devastating. Ida’s wrath left more than 125 000 people internally displaced, 200 people killed and more than 17 000 people living in shelters.

SalvAide works directly in six of the seven regions directly affected (Cuscatlan, Cabanas, St. Vicente, La Paz, San Salvador, and La Libertad). During the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, SalvAide has helped CRIPDES to distribute basic needs kits, hygiene kits, kitchen utensils, beds, bedding, and clothing to 252 families in the port of La Libertad, Aguilares and El Paisnal. In areas most negatively impacted CRIPDES’s youth committees were among the first to arrive and provided relief to those in need. CRIPDES also has provided psychological and social support for children and adults living in shelters. Additionally, CRIPDES actively participates in the development of a vulnerability analysis and strategic plans for the reconstruction phase starting in 2010.

While the emergency phase of this crisis has ended, SalvAide is currently supporting our partners in medium and long-term reconstruction that the negatively affected communities currently phase. It is clear that poverty, deforestation, soil erosion and inadequate infrastructure, has exacerbated the crisis situation. In addition, the hurricane hit El Salvador at the end of the rain season when beans, a key staple in the Salvadoran diet, were to be harvestedThe destruction of this key food stable signifies that more than one million people face intense food insecurity for the remainder of this year. The resulting destruction has caused further disparity, as basic needs such as a nutritious, safe meals and clean water are even more of a challenge to come by than before.

SalvAide is committed to supporting CRIPDES and CORDES in their medium and long-term reconstruction efforts. SalvAide is working to develop an appropriate food security program with CORDES and will continue to support CRIPDES is its reconstruction efforts, such as rebuilding school, homes, and community centres at the local level.
