One single cashew tree
can live for more than
twenty five years
and
provide an
average yield of

20 Kg raw nuts

per tree, per year.

What looks like a bell pepper is the plant's "cashew apple", called a marañon in Central America.
The fruit is actually quite tasty
.

Cashew trees produce both a fruit ("apple") and a nut, and a valuable oil can be drawn from the nut shell. After the cashew flower blooms, a nut forms. The apple later swells between the nut shell and the stem. It takes two months for the cashew apple to ripen. The fruit can also be eaten, slighty acidic after-taste, but otherwise very refreshing. When harvested, the apple can only keep for twenty-four hours before it begins to ferment. Although the fruit can be used for making many typical fruit products (jellies, jams, juice, wine and liquor), the apple is often discarded, in pursuit of the nut.

The cashew fruit consists of two distinct parts, a fleshy stalk in the form of a pear, also called cashew apple, with a brilliant yellow or red skin, which can measure from 5 to 10 cm; and a nut of greybrownish colour, in the shape of a kidney, which hangs from the lower end of the stalk or "apple" and which is the true nut called cashew. Of the stalk or "apple", juices, syrups, preserves, wine or licors are obtained. But its main commercial use is the cashew nut itself, shelled, roasted and salted forming an ingredient as snack and the confectionery industry.

It is likely that Spanish sailors introduced the cashew to Central America in the sixteenth century and the Portuguese colonists to its territories in East Africa (Mozambique) and India (Goa), from which its cultivation extended to Indonesia and the Philippines.

When you make a donation to plant a cashew tree, it truly gives life by empowering people in El Salvador to become self-sufficient. These trees not only provide a self-renewing source of food, but also provide a livelihood! The environmental benefits of planting cashew trees are numerous. These orchards serve as habitats for birds, bees, and wild animals that encourage biodiversity, and they provide shade for animals, reduce erosion, clean the air, and the presence of cashew orchards allows farmers to harvest large amounts of firewood from yearly pruning which greatly reduces stress on local forests by eliminating the need to cut down indigenous trees. Since Cashew trees grow well in harsh environments where other trees can't grow, cashew orchards allow farmers to reclaim unusable land.

Cashew trees also help combat malnutrition since their apples have a higher vitamin C than oranges. Since this fruit does not have a long shelf life, it is always consumed locally ensuring that local people benefit from its consumption. Cashew trees also serve as great windbreaks which allow farmers to protect their crops from harsh winds which ultimately lead to higher crop yields. This in turn helps ensure that the farmer can feed his family.

Cashew trees also serve as a great shade structure for families living in the tropics. Underneath their dense crowns, people relax and hold social gatherings with protection from the hot sun.

Purchase a life-giving Cashew Tree in a loved one’s name and a beautiful card will be sent to
them to acknowledge your gift.
